Music is a thriving department based in its own teaching area comprising of two teaching rooms, a recording studio, several small practice rooms and storage areas.
The staffing consists of a head of department along with one full-time and one part-time teacher. We also have a music technician.
We deliver an up-to-date scheme of work to years 7 and 8 and our year 9 foundation course prepares students for the GCSE course. We run the AQA GCSE syllabus and at present have two classes in year 10 and two classes in year 11. At key stage 5 we share the Music and Music Technology courses with Treviglas Community College.
The department uses ICT to support and extend the curriculum. Both teaching rooms have an electronic whiteboard and room 1 has twelve purpose-built PC's which run cubase and sibelius software.
Extra-curricular opportunities are a particular strength. We employ eleven instrumental teachers from the County Music Service, with over one hundred students taking instrumental tuition in school. There is a great enthusiasm for performance work, both in school and the wider community and it is common for our talented students to progress to area and county ensembles. The school has Junior and Senior Jazz Bands, an Area String Orchestra, Samba Band, Percussion Ensemble and choir, as well as several thriving rock bands. The Jazz Band are currently preparing for next years tour of Northern Spain.
The department works closely with the other expressive arts, principally Art, Drama and Dance and school productions and musicals are a feature of the school.
